The garden aims to show what can be achieved to help nature and climate using small outside areas – especially in towns and cities. The Renter’s Retreat explores how a small, shady, courtyard can be made into a beautiful wildlife haven, while providing a relaxing space for people to enjoy. Many of the features could be used to help wildlife in outside spaces across the country, regardless of the size, location – or whether the occupiers own the property. They include a hügelkultur mound (permaculture method), a raised pond, log planters, and modular beds that can be dismantled and moved around, and methods for home composting and capturing rainwater. The garden demonstrates how tenants and homeowners can improve outside spaces for wildlife, and highlights that we all have a part to play in reversing nature’s decline.
